What is Tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide, sold under the brand name Mounjaro, is a subcutaneous injection approved by the FDA in May 2022 to assist type 2 diabetes with blood sugar control and used in weight loss as off-label. It’s both a glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and GLP-1 receptor agonist.  Tirzepatide mimics the action of two different gut hormones, the GLP-1 hormone, and the GIP hormone. This means Tirzepatide may offer an extra weight loss boost. The GIP hormone can also trigger insulin creation and sensations of fullness. This means Tirzepatide may offer an extra weight loss boost.  

When blood sugar rises after eating, the drug stimulates the body to produce more insulin, which lowers blood sugar levels. It also slows down the movement of food from the stomach by replicating a natural hormone, making people feel fuller for longer. After investigating a higher dose of Tirzepatide in people without Type 2 Diabetes, the FDA approved the drug for weight loss in adults who meet certain requirements. 

How does Tirzepatide work for weight loss?

Tirzepatide imitates the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (or GLP-1) by targeting brain regions that control appetite and food intake. Following a meal, your digestive tract secretes this incretin hormone, which lowers your blood sugar by stimulating the release of insulin and preventing sugar production. This allows you to consume less food and shed pounds.

Am I a candidate for Tirzepatide weight loss injections?

What is Semaglutide?

 Semaglutide is FDA approved to treat type 2 diabetes under the brand name Ozempic and when prescribed for weight loss is sold under the brand name Wegovy with a once-weekly subcutaneous injection that helps regulate appetite and metabolism.  

How does Semaglutide work for weight loss?

Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist which means it mimics the GLP-1 hormone and makes you feel less hungry. When you eat, your digestive tract releases the GLP-1 hormone, prompting the body to create more insulin. It can also send fullness signals to the brain. In simpler terms, Semaglutide prolongs digestion, helping to maintain your feeling of fullness for a longer period. So, when you take semaglutide injections, you feel fuller faster and are less likely to overeat.

One benefit of semaglutide, though, is that it is available in both oral tablets and injections. Tirzepatide is only available as an injection.
